George Boole - His Life and Work [Hbk]
by Desmond MacHale
ISBN :0-906783-05-4
€36.00
|
This book, the first full-length biography of George Boole (1815 - 1864), describes the mystic genius whose ideas have utterly transformed the world in which we live. Computers, information storage and retrieval systems, electronic circuits and almost the entire world of present-day technology depend vitally on the simple but ingenious mathematics he invented - Boolean Algebra.

|
This new biography describes the life of William Rowan Hamilton (1805 - 1865), one of the world's most brilliant mathematicians and Ireland's greatest scientist. Besides being a mathematician extraordinary, Hamilton was also a child prodigy, poet, philosopher, astronomer and visionary. This book deals with Hamilton the man, his formidable personality, and examines the various origins from which his genius seems to spring.

Papers from NUMOS I, the First Intl Workshop on the Numerical Modelling of Semiconductors
This workshop was concerned with fundamental research on the numerical modelling of semiconductor devices and processes. It was device orientated and the emphasis was on long term basic research rather than on state of the art reports. Two distinct but interdependent research areas were of particular relevance. The first was the determination of the correct model to describe the underlying physics of the device or process and, secondly, the development of effective practical algorithms for the numerical solution of the equations describing the models.

Analysis of Mathematical Models of Semiconductor Devices [Hbk]
by Michael S Mock
ISBN :0-906783-07-0
€113.00
|
For purposes of design and analysis, the flow of mobile carriers in the interior of a semiconductor device is often described by a fairly well-known system of partial differential equations. As the size of devices has decreased, with a corresponding increase in the complexity of their dynamics, the classical assumptions and simplifications used for solution of this system have become increasingly inappropriate and inadequate. A demand for quantitative accuracy in the solutions of this problem has been partially satisfied by the increased use of direct numerical methods. In this context, the book has two principal objectives: to introduce engineers to some mathematical background of this problem in general and that of the commonly adopted numerical methods in particular; and second, to present numerical analysts and other mathematicans with an interesting problem in nonlinear partial differential equations of elliptic or parabolic type, with important applications.
Contents: Preface; Introduction; The Stationary Problem; Discretization of the Stationary Problem; The Time-dependent Problem; Discretization of the Time-dependent Problem; Simulation of Multiple, Coupled Devices; Bibliography; Index.

BOUNDARY AND INTERIOR LAYERS - COMPUTATIONAL AND ASYMPTOTIC METHODS (BAIL)
Proceedings of the BAIL Conferences
The main goal of these conferences is to bring together scientists and engineers who encounter boundary and interior layers in their research and mathematicians who apply computational and asymptotic techniques to the solution of such problems. The volumes contain papers on methods for the solution of stiff systems of ordinary differential equations, investigations of singularly perturbed boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations, solutions of problems in aero- and hydrodynamics, problems in physics and biology, problems in control theory and many other areas where boundary and interior layers occur. |

Uniform Numerical Methods for Problems with Initial and Boundary Layers [Hbk]
by Doolan, Miller, Schilders
ISBN :0-906783-02-X
€59.00
|
This monograph contains results from the research of the authors in recent years concerning uniform numerical methods for problems with initial and boundary layers. The majority of the results are new and have not been published before. Those already published have appeared either without proof or with the proofs given only in outline. The book is a self-contained exposition of the subject matter. It begins with a graphic demonstration of the birth of the boundary layer, and this is followed by the main text, which is divided into three parts. The first two are theoretical in nature, while the last contains numerical results and FORTRAN programs. In addition, some results of a technical nature are collected in two appendices, and these are followed by sections on notation and terminology. It ends with an extensive bibliography of the relevant literature and an index.

Ordinary Differential Equations [Hbk]
by M Sever
ISBN :0-906783-73-9
€78.00
|
This text contains more than sufficient material for a two-semester first course in ordinary differential equations. The material included has been chosen with two specific objectives. First, this book seeks to prepare the reader for serious courses in partial differential equations, functional analysis, and numerical analysis. It includes a number of motivating examples and illustrations of ideas to be pursued in these courses, presented in the simple framework provided by ordinary differential equations. The reader will also get considerable practice in basic analysis: the calculus of inequalities, basic Hilbert space techniques, elementary use of the Dirac delta function. Second, this book contains introductions to several ideas of current research interest, including nonlinear boundary value problems, Lyapunov exponents, finite-element methods, singulary perturbations, and orbits between critical points of autonomous systems.

TEXT PROCESSING SYSTEMS (PROTEXT)
Proceedings of the PROTEXT Conferences
The main goal of this series of conferences is the transfer of text processing technology from the computer science community to the user community. These volumes appeal therefore to a wide cross-section of text processing users from industry, government services and academia and also to computer scientists who are anxious to introduce new text processing to potential users. |

FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Proceedings of the Sixth International Congress of Food Science and Technology 18 - 23 September 1983, Dublin, Ireland
The Sixth International Congress of Food Science and Technology had as its theme 'Development - Welfare - Peace' and the ultimate objective of applying science and technology to human needs. The most recent advances in the fundamental aspects of food science and technology were discussed, with special emphasis on the problems of developing countries, and the influences of social, economic, cultural and political factors on human nutrition.

Economics or Propaganda [Pbk]
by Arthur Fairbanks
ISBN :0-906783-75-5
€18.00
|
Arthur Fairbanks is the pseudonym of a well-known mathematician, who has published widely and has held positions at several American universities. His background thus emphasizes the examination of scientific new ideas, and their impartial verification or rejection. From this position, he questions whether economics is in fact a genuine science, objectively pursuing information, or rather a collection of attempts to rationalize policies which aid the few and neglect or actually harm the vast majority.

Substance P - Proceedings of the International Symposium held in Dublin 1983 [Hbk]
by Peter Skrabanek and David Powell (edited by)
ISBN :0-906783-16-X
€78.00
|
This book documents the latest developments in SP research presented at the International Interdisciplinary Substance P Symposium in Dublin, attended by scientists from more that 20 countries. Substance P, the first brain-gut peptide, was discovered by U S von Euler and J H Gaddum in 1931. About 2,000 articles have been published since then and, at present, Substance P is the third most active field in Life Sciences. The most exciting areas are the roles of Substance P in sensory and autonomic neurotransmission, and in central and peripheral endocrine regulations, and naturally these aspects are covered in this book.
